About Me

My photo
Mona Kamal
Mona Kamal is a visual artist who creates monumental new media installations that explore her ancestry and her family’s history of migration. She creates fictitious exotic spaces that spark a feeling of nostalgia that tell a story of a lost culture due to immigration. This is done through referencing architecture through the use of building materials such as wood, bricks, concrete and cement. Within her constructed spaces her story of relocation is further created through the use of family photographs, found objects and video. Mona has exhibited throughout Canada, New York and India including exhibitions at YYZ Artists’ Outlet and A space Gallery in Toronto, Rush Arts Gallery and Exit Art in New York and Gallery Espace in New Delhi. She has received several grants for the creation of her artworks through the Ontario and the Toronto Arts Councils. In 2007 she attended a residency at the Sanskriti Foundation in New Delhi. Mona completed her BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1998 and received her MFA from Parsons the New School for Design in 2010.
